A spectacular opening concert, with Jeths’ world première and star violinist Repin, underlining Philharmonie Zuidnederland's high ambitions. After a warm welcome with a photo opportunity and some snacks and drinks, we were invited to an instructive introduction by violinist Tijmen Wehlburg. This musician proved to be an encyclopaedia on classical music, telling us all about the job of a conductor and about Ravel's composition La Valse.
After this introduction, it was time for the real thing. Having listened to short speeches by orchestra manager Rossu and Maastricht mayor Annemarie Penn, we were able to enjoy four magnificent compositions. Firstly, the famous piece by Grieg: Suite no. 1 from Peer Gynt. This was followed by Sibelius’ violin concerto, in which Philharmonie Zuidnederland was joined by the great guest violinist Vadim Repin. After the interval, it was time for the world première of Suite Hôtel de Pékin, This extraordinary piece was composed by the Dutch National Composer Willem Jeths. The last treat was Ravel's beautiful La Valse. At the end, there was a well-deserved standing ovation. The evening was concluded in a pleasant atmosphere, enjoying drinks provided by Sauter Wijnen and Theater aan het Vrijthof. In short, a fantastic evening, during which the chief conductor enchanted not only the orchestra, but also the audience!
