National Survey of Care Indicators (LPZ)

Maastricht University, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences / Department of Health Care and Nursing Science

LPZ Care problems

The National Survey of Care Indicators (LPZ) is conducted twice a year. It measures the prevalence of care problems like e.g. pressure ulcers, malnutrition and incontinence within the health care systems of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand and Austria. The LPZ puts health care under the magnifying glass, as clients and residents of hundreds of health care institutions are examined on the same day for common care problems (such as pressure ulcer, incontinence and malnutrition).
By taking part in the measurement, participating health care institutions are able to obtain insight in the prevention and treatment of the related care issues, within their institution. Insight in the burden care issues cause can provoke institutions and it management to introduce measures like preventive screening, prevention and treatment. As the measurement takes place in a large number of institutions, participating organisations can benchmark themselves against similar institutions and/or departments nationally and internationally. This enables organisations to gain insight in the prevention and treatment of the specific care issues which allows them to make focused and intelligent decisions to improve the quality of care in their institution.

The main objective of Flycatcher for this project is to make the data collection for the nursing staff as easy as possible and to present the results of these measurements as transparent as possible.

Flycatcher has been working in close collaboration with the project group LPZ since 2004. Flycatcher’s main role is to automate the data collection process for this measurement. By making using of laptops, tablets and other mobile devices, the collection of data on paper became obsolete.

In addition, Flycatcher developed a special reporting tool that continuously analyses the data and processes the results. Almost immediately after the completion of the questionnaires, the participating health care institutions receive a custom report, with their own processed and tailored data.

Flycatcher also developed a new form of reporting: the Online Dashboard (see also smart reports). This provides quick and clear insights into the results.

It turns out that institutions that participate yearly in the LPZ-measurement are more successful in reducing health care problems than institutions that do not participate: paying attention to prevention is the beginning of prevention itself.

“LPZ encourages continuous quality measurement and quality of healthcare.”
Frank Staal, chairman Board of Directors de Riethorst Stromenland

“Falls, pressure ulcer and malnutrition are the cause of many expenses and reduce the quality of life of patients. As head nurse, it is my job to investigate this and to set gaols.”
Christine Uhl, head nurse University Clinic Graz

“LPZ touches the core of the profession. Nurses like to fill in the measurement. They are proud when they see that they score better than previous years.”
Dik Mol, chairman Envida
